Zyzzyx Road: The $2 Million Movie That Made Just $30

rfid news

Zyzzyx Road cost approximately $2 million to make, but took just $30 at the box office. Devin Faraci over at CHUD.com first spotted this box office disaster, so credits goes to him for tracking down the following information:

It was in just one theater for just one week. The lucky theater in question was the Highland Village Park Theater in Dallas ,Texas. It opened on February 25th 2006, and closed six days later.

Directed by John Penney, the unpronounceable film starred Katherine Heigl of Grey’s Anatomy fame, Tom Sizemore of Tom Sizemore fame and Leo Grillo. That last name should be a clue as Zyzzyx Road was made by Leo Grillo Productions, a company set up to produce films for Grillo to star in.

In fairness to Grillo and his movie, it seems the one week release was just Regent honoring their distribution deal in the smallest possible way. But that $30 total should ensure Zyzzyx Road becomes a minor cult classic if and when it gets a DVD release.
