What a Wii Workout

I know that the skeptics are going to rubbish this claim, but I will give it the benefit of doubt. Reports coming in from the U.K. suggest that Zander Urquhart, a personal trainer, has developed a exercise routine where he incorporates the usage of Wii to burn calories. As a user of Wii I can vouch for the fact that playing it does leave you a bit worked-out, and I guess if channeled properly, then maybe our dude here has something to be proud of. Thanks to Wii’s unique motion-sensitive controller, you actually feel the effort put in to mimic a swing of the tennis racket, baseball bat, golf club or boxing gloves.

A study by Liverpool John Moores University found that in an average 12.2-hour gaming week, Wii players can burn 1830 calories - shifting 27lb a year. According to statistics gained from the Food Magazine, calories burned using a Nintendo Wii for 15 to 20 minutes compare favorably with other forms of exercise. Here is the chart for you to compare:

Aerobic dancing - medium intensity, equivalent to jogging – 130; Cycling on flat ground – 125; Playing golf – 100; Playing tennis – 140; Playing football – 140.
