Vista Windows Experience Index and WinSAT - Running Benchmarks

Windows Vista relies heavily on it’s Windows Experience Index. This is used to determine what features will be loaded on install (like Aero) and may be used in the future by graphical applications like games to automatically adjust their settings based on the user’s hardware.Vista should recognize when you make a hardware or BIOS change (such as adding RAM, getting a new proc or overclocking your existing one). If Vista doesn’t recognize a change, or if you want to rerun a test for the purpose of resetting your score or troubleshooting, you can use the winsat command. You can think of WinSAT as a built in benchmarking tool provided by Microsoft.

To run WinSAT, you’ll have to launch a command prompt as an administrator. To do this, go to your Start thingy, and in the search box type cmd. Don’t hit enter.

Once search brings up the cmd.exe program (it may just say cmd) right click this and choose Run as Administrator.

Now you’ve got a command prompt with administrative privilages. Let’s see what basic information WinSAT knows about your computer. Type:
