Motherboards are always evolving. New core logic ships, enabling new features and expanding the capabilities of old ones. New tweaks are added, as well as enhanced designs that make installation and setup easier than ever.
Anyone who has built his own PC understands this. Those of us who build frequently adapt to new capabilities quickly. More infrequent system builders sometimes are startled by how fast motherboard technology evolves. Recently, Jim Louderback was upgrading his old system to a Core 2 Duo, so we sent on a 965P motherboard his way. The six pin, PCIe power adapter is something he’ll have to deal with, and he is also relearning the whole master/slave thing when it comes to storage.
Now ASUS comes along with the idea of a “Vista ready” motherboard. We review two boards, one for Intel processors and one for AMD CPUs. These are the M2N32-SLI Premium Vista Edition and P5B Premium Vista Edition mobos. As it turns out, these motherboards really aren’t that new—they just have a couple of extra features grafted onto them.
We’re reviewing these boards slightly differently than most motherboards since these are built on existing motherboard platforms we’ve extensively reviewed in the past: the Socket AM2 M2N32-SLI Premium and the P965 based P5B Deluxe.
