Two Cheers for Don Imus

Don Imus has been saying outrageous things on air ever since he got behind a microphone. It’s a trait that has made him one of the nation’s most popular radio hosts, but has also regularly landed him in trouble. Since arriving on the New York scene in 1971, his ups and down since then have included battles with drugs and alcohol, and controversies over comments deemed racist, sexist and homophobic. The latest uproar concerns remarks Mr. Imus made about the Rutgers women’s basketball team after their defeat in the NCAA finals. On April 9, CBS and NBC, which broadcasts his show over MSNBC, announced they were suspending Mr. Imus as a punishment for the comments.
