With a small pause, the Canadian based tracker Demonoid is being reported as being down again, and this time for the count. The notice on the demonoid site today is stating that the CRIA threatened the ISP, and that is pretty much so that until Demonoid can find a new home or country in which to do operations in.
The CRIA threatened the company renting the servers to us, and because of this it is not possible to keep the site online. Sorry for the inconvenience and thanks for your understanding. Source: Demonoid front page
What is interesting is that all the tracker shutdowns are resulting in a higher use of encryption in Bittorrent clients and servers. Torrent Freak and The Register both claim that the use of encryption is up significantly for users who are using Bittorrent. This has an added side bonus of confusing a lot of folks who do the monitoring and capturing of who is downloading what.
Add to that the standard block list that should be used by everyone who is using P2P at this point, and you stand a pretty good chance of staying away from the big companies that are in Anti-P2P, and confusing the monitoring of those systems as well.
This last quarter has been difficult on Bittorrent as a whole, and while the passing of demonoid and oink are lamented, and people are stunned at the shutdown of tv-links, along with the survival of other systems, the community is what is making this very interesting.
People are willing to step into the breech and setup new trackers, and deliver new services, in a time where running a tracker in an industrialized nation can be very difficult and very dangerous to the people running it. There are still folks willing to do this. The cost benefit of running a tracker right now depends on how popular the tracker gets, and what kind of material the tracker carries.
Obviously though, people are still downloading and sharing music, movies, and everything else, all efforts to shut this down to the contrary, if anything it keeps on coming back stronger than ever.
If this was a company, the intense customer demand would be a dead cert clue that the process is highly popular, there are ways to make money off of it, and people are simply, going to use it.
