Well, it wasn’t your typical birthday party.
Saturday, April 28th would have been Saddam Hussein’s 70th birthday. Most of us believe thats a day we don’t need to remember. But in Ouja, Iraq, hundreds of people celebrated. They carried flowers and unlit candles to Saddam’s tomb to mark what would have been his birthday. While most of us would be celebrating his death, kids wore white, and many wore badges bearing Husseins portraits. Songs were sung and cake was served in Hussein’s burial place.

Just a small update on how things are going. I haven’t talked about Walamu’s status in a bit, but the site’s actually doing
pretty well. As I’m meeting more people here at Rutgers, more people are hearing about Walamu and the word-of-mouth effect keeps multiplying. It’s not at a level where it’s self sustainable yet, but most of the visitors that come to Walamu are via word-of-mouth only second to Facebook. The downside is anchored around confidentiality, security, privacy and so on (”they need to know” mentality). But the upside is quite transformational. Having this type of transparency (”the right to know” mentality) can create connections between people that can result in improved decision making and foster innovation.

BRITAIN’S crisis with Iran deepened yesterday as Tony Blair warned Tehran it has only a few days to release 15 captured British sailors and marines, as a US commander in the Gulf criticised the British for not opening fire on the Iranian Revolutionary Guards who seized them.
British Foreign Secretary Margaret Beckett spoke by telephone yesterday with Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki and repeated that the British sailors and marines were operating in Iraqi waters as they searched for smugglers at sea.She asked that British diplomats be allowed to meet the captured sailors, and demanded their safe return. In Jerusalem, US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice also called for their release.
