Apple iPhone still exclusively available from T-Mobile

T-Mobile remains the exclusive provider of Apple iPhones. Following a legal decision, the Bonn-based mobile operator is currently required with immediate effect to offer the iPhone without an obligatory T-Mobile contract as well. The legal conditions are attributable to an injunction submitted by competitor Vodafone D2, who was behind T-Mobile in the race to sell the Apple iPhone in Germany. T-Mobile will meet this requirement until the legal aspects have been clarified. The telephone offered without a T-Mobile contract is available for EUR 999 in all Deutsche Telekom shops selling the Apple iPhone.

Mobile-phone carriers are preparing to offer a service that would seamlessly and automatically switch cellular calls to Wi-Fi networks once a customer is within range of a participating network. This dual-mode approach could save consumers service minutes, as some of the time they currently spend using cellular service would be spent using Wi-Fi. This could be particularly appealing in Europe, where cellular rates are high. In the US, the technology could enable users to buy less expensive cellular-service packages that offer fewer minutes per month. Meanwhile, the plan would give cellular customers access to highspeed Wi-Fi networks for video, games, Web access, and other dataintensive services, which could attract subscribers. Read the more »
