Microsoft is frequently dinged for having insecure products, with security holes and vulnerabilities. But Symantec no friend of Microsoft, said in its latest research report that when it comes to widely-used operating systems, Microsoft is doing better overall than its leading commercial competitors.

The information was a part of Symantec’s 11th Internet Security Threat Report. The report, released this week, covered a huge range of security and vulnerability issues over the last six months of 2006, including operating systems.

Mozilla Corp.’s Firefox suffered from 26% fewer vulnerabilities in the second half of 2006 than Microsoft Corp.’s Internet Explorer, a security company’s research said yesterday.

According to Symantec’s tally, 40 Firefox vulnerabilities were disclosed between August and December 2006; Internet Explorer (IE), meanwhile, was hit with 54 bugs. Opera and Safari — the browser Apple Inc. bundles with Mac OS X — had four flaws each.

Microsoft apparently yanks promos that peddled ’security fix’ through misleading threats.
Banner advertisements for a security application said to report false or inflated threats appeared for at least a few days on Microsoft’s instant messaging (IM) program, prompting warnings from security analysts.
