It flopped in America. Now, for its British launch, Sony has put the price up.
The last time Sony launched a games console, it was an overnight sensation. The PlayStation 2, launched in 2000, didn’t simply offer consumers fabulously hi-tech games and graphics. It also gave them a built-in, groovy new gadget, the DVD player - two new toys at a very competitive price. It was a combination that made the PS2 the fastest-selling console of all time. With sales of 115 million units worldwide, it is still going strong even now, in its seventh year in the shops.

Sony’s Jack Tretton famously said in an interview with EGM:
If you can find a PS3 anywhere in North America that’s been on shelves for more than five minutes, I’ll give you 1,200 bucks for it. I can get any retail buyer on the phone with you and get them to verify that there’s not a single retail location in America where there’s a PlayStation 3 on the shelf for sale. They’ve all been sold in a matter of minutes.

A classic case of competing with self! Acording to figures published Friday by a research company, Media Create that receives data from nearly 3,000 stores around Japan, Sony Computer Entertainment’s seven year old console PlayStation 2 has beaten its brand new PlayStation 3 in terms of sales in late January.
