Universal search: The best answer is still the best answer

Back in 2001, Eric asked for a brainstorm of a few “splashy” ideas in search. A designer and product manager at the time, I made a few mockups — one of which was for ‘universal search.’ It was a sample search results page for Britney Spears that, in addition to web results, also had news, images, and groups results right on the same page. Even then, we could see that people could easily become overwhelmed with the number of different search tools available on Google — let alone those that would be created over the next few years. This proliferation of tools, while useful, has outgrown the old model of search. We want to help you find the very best answer, even if you don’t know where to look.

Youtube Video : High Tech Toasters Graphics

A few weeks ago, we rounded up a bunch of high tech toasters and wrote about about using a hot-air gun to draw designs, by hand, on fancy toast. We’ve now mounted the hot air gun to a computer-controlled X-Y control system so that we can use it to print arbitrary images on toast.

Many Turn Out to Celebrate Hussein’s Would-be Birthday

Well, it wasn’t your typical birthday party.

Saturday, April 28th would have been Saddam Hussein’s 70th birthday. Most of us believe thats a day we don’t need to remember. But in Ouja, Iraq, hundreds of people celebrated. They carried flowers and unlit candles to Saddam’s tomb to mark what would have been his birthday. While most of us would be celebrating his death, kids wore white, and many wore badges bearing Husseins portraits. Songs were sung and cake was served in Hussein’s burial place.
