Google buys Doubleclick

In its largest acquisition yet, Google has agreed to pay $3.1 billion in cash for online ad company DoubleClick, the companies announced.

The deal gives Google a large network of advertisers and Web publishers to serve and sell ads to, and it boosts the search giant’s banner advertising business, which lagged rival Yahoo’s.

The acquisition, which is expected to close sometime later this year, also will give media agencies and advertisers the ability to manage integrated search and display ad campaigns through one centralized console, Schmidt said. “The whole system will run faster,” he said. “Users will benefit from more targeted ads.”

Search engine giant Google is launching My Maps, a new feature of Google Maps that enables users to create custom maps for personal use or sharing through search.
My Maps is available via the Google Maps websites of the US, UK, Canada, France, Italy, Germany, Spain, Netherlands, Japan and Australia.

Microsoft Issues a Dozen Security Patches, Fixes Security Tools

It’s that time again–time to get your patches on, and to do so quickly. Microsoft yesterday hosted the biggest Patch Tuesday event of the young year when it posted 12 security fixes for 20 security flaws in its products. Seven of the patches addressed zero-day flaws that have been used to launch attacks across the Internet in recent weeks, and there was even a patch fixing Microsoft’s security tools, which could have automatically triggered the exploit with no interaction from the user.

Google suffers setback in copyright case

A ruling against Google in a copyright case in Belgium may influence courts in other European countries, but not the United States where laws are more permissible, copyright lawyers said Tuesday.

A Belgian court on Tuesday ordered the search giant to refrain from showing excerpts of articles from French- and German-language Belgian newspapers on Google News and Google’s Web search site for Belgium, reaffirming an earlier ruling by the same court against the company. However, in a nod to Google, the court reduced the daily fine Google faces if it fails to heed the order, from $1.3 million to $32,500.
