Rainy royal goodbye in Spain

Members of Spain’s royal family paid a tearful goodbye to Erika Ortiz, younger sister of Spain’s Princess Letizia Ortiz, who died a day earlier aged 31.

Fine arts graduate Erika Ortiz, the mother of a six-year-old girl, was widely reported to have taken her own life although the cause of death was not officially confirmed.

She was known to have been suffering from depression having split with the father of her child, sculptor Antonio Vigo, last year. The tabloid media had written at length about the couple’s separation.

Princess Letizia, wife to heir to the throne Prince Felipe de Bourbon, was in tears as she attended a brief religious ceremony with other members of the royal family including King Juan Carlos.

The family held onto one another for support as they gathered at the crematory in the Madrid district of Tres Cantos in cold and driving rain.

Letizia spoke briefly to the media after the cremation.

“I would like to thank everyone who have felt saddened by the death of my little sister,” the former news presenter said before bursting into tears.

Erika Ortiz was found dead at her home on Wednesday and El Pais newspaper reported that she had been treated for anxiety and stress and that a bottle of medicine had been found near her body.
