Another photo service gets funded: San Francisco-based Piczo, which launched in 2004, has raised nearly $4m from Sierra Ventures and Catamount Ventures. The site has been a massive hit with teens and about 50% of the users are girls under 18.
Piczo’s biggest selling point is the ability to create a highly customized website around your photos. But unlike MySpace, there’s no need to learn html - the Page Editor lets you create new page elements on the fly and drag them into position. Unsurprisingly, this freedom has led to some heinous crimes against web design, but the users don’t care at all. The site also allows members to paste code snippets into their pages - as a result, the companies that provide buttons, graphics and text for MySpace are going after Piczo users too.
As far as I’m concerned, a service can be a specialist or an aggregator - Piczo is the latter. And just like Tagworld, Bebo, Panjea and LostCherry, the best strategy is to aggregate hundreds of other services and create a vibrant ecosystem around the product. In that respect, Piczo is doing great - thousands of developers are creating tools to feed the Piczo beast.
